Our focus lies in the following areas:
- Arthroscopic reconstructive procedures of the knee
- Arthroscopic shoulder surgery
- Management of common over use injuries and sports injuries
- Cartilage Transplantation
- Joint replacement surgery of the shoulder and knee
- Trauma surgery
- General Orthopaedics
Services
Arthroscopic Knee Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery, which has gained popularity over the last decade.
The word arthroscopy comes from two Greek words, “arthro” (joint) and “skopein”
(to look). The surgeon makes a small incision and inserts pencil sized instruments into the joint. Various
problems in the knee like meniscal tears, ligament injuries, loose bodies etc can be treated with arthroscopic
surgery. Minimally invasive surgery allows the patient to have a better cosmetic outcome and recover much
faster. Most patients have their arthroscopic surgery as outpatients and are home several hours after the
surgery.
Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery
Although the knee is the most common joint in which arthroscopic surgery is performed, in recent years
arthroscopic shoulder procedures have gained popularity. The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in
the body. Unfortunately all the moving makes it prone to injury. Problems can occur suddenly as in dislocations
or over time with degeneration and repeated overhead motions. Impingement, labral tears, instability and rotator
cuff tears can all be treated arthroscopically should conservative treatment with medication, injections and
physiotherapy fail.
Overuse and Common Sports Injuries
Participation in sports can cause injuries to the soft tissue. Tendons, ligaments and muscles are prone to
injury. Some of the common soft tissue injuries include sprains, strain contusions, tendinits, bursitis and
stress injuries. These can occur as a result of a single episode of trauma or from repeated overuse in both
athletes and manual workers. This results in pain, swelling and eventually damage to the soft tissue. Fortunately
most of these problems can be dealt without surgery. Apart from treating the problem we can advise you on a program
of exercise or rehabilitation to restore function.
Cartilage Transplantation
Damage to the cartilage can lead to arthritis of the joint especially the knee and ankle. Although cartilage
transplantation has been in practice for many years only recently has it gained popularity worldwide. Arthroscopic
procedures will only address small lesions. The larger lesions are better treated with cartilage transplantation.
We practice both the first and second-generation techniques in transplantation. With such procedures patients are
able to return to activity and is most cases delay the need for major surgery such as joint replacement for the damaged
joints.
Joint Replacement Surgery
We also see patients whom unfortunately have advanced arthritis of the joints. They are treated with conservative means
such as medications, injections and physiotherapy first. Occasionally we also recommend arthroscopic surgery for these
patients. If they do not improve then they become candidates for joint replacement surgery. The knee, hip and shoulder
joints are the most common joint replacements that we do. We work closely with the physiotherapists to ensure that the
patient is well-rehabilitated post joint replacement surgery to ensure that they have the best possible outcome and
continue to lead a healthy and active life style.
Trauma Surgery
In our sports based practice we also see a number of fractures, which are sustained during sports and accidental falls.
These can be treated with manipulation and reduction followed by casting or when necessary with surgery. When surgery
is necessary usually the fractures are internally fixed with metal implants to ensure anatomical alignment and proper
healing.
General Orthopaedics
General orthopaedics, as the name suggests, entails the treatment of very common orthopaedic conditions. Such conditions
include trigger fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, dequervain tendonitis etc. We have tried to make this website as
comprehensive as possible to cover as many common orthopaedic conditions.
We hope that you will take time to browse through the web pages especially on patient education as well as the section
on knee arthritis. Please feel free to email us at any time if you have
any questions. Please visit the pages on patient education to get further details on the above-mentioned problems.
